Things We Saw Today: Sebastian Stan, the Actor, Exists in the MCU?

Recommended Videos

**Mild Avengers: Endgame spoilers below.**

I’m still mad that this took me longer than it should have to realize. Rhodey and Scott Lang are listing movies that deal with time travel at one point during Avengers: Endgame, and you know what movie they include? Hot Tub Time Machine. Now, if you’re like me, you know Sebastian Stan’s filmography, mainly because I was a teenage girl in 2006 when The Covenant came out and have been a goner ever since.

So, I was shocked and angry when I realized I didn’t connect that, in bringing up this movie, Marvel then made it canon that Sebastian Stan, the actor, also exists in the world of Bucky Barnes.

Stan, who played asshole Blaine in Hot Tub Time Machine, has a pretty different look in each movie universe, unless you count Blaine’s glasses as Winter Soldier-esque.

Blaine is in charge of the mountain at the ski resort where the movie is set, and other than being a complete asshole to the main characters, that’s kind of all he does. But still, his portrayal of this character clearly stuck out to everyone because we all remembered that Stan was a part of the movie.

That being said, does that mean that any joke or reference made by a character in the MCU also exists in that world? There are quite a lot of pop culture references in the movies. In fact, there’s a reference to The Big Lebowski in the movie, as well, and you know who stares in that as the Dude? Jeff Bridges, who also played Obadiah Stane.

Will Marvel ever comment on this? Will we know whether or not Sebastian Stan and Bucky Barnes both exist together in one universe? Is Bucky secretly an actor, as well? There’s a lot to unpack, but, in the meantime, we can all go rewatch Hot Tub Time Machine for the plaid shirts with turtlenecks underneath.
