Disney Making a Live-Action Snow White, Time Is a Flat Circle, and Movies Are Echoes Reverberating Through Space
"Oh snow way," she said.
It’s the running joke you always hear about Hollywood: They’re out of ideas. Honestly, I think there’s a (massive, unmistakeable) kernel of truth in that, and this news that Disney is working on a live-action Snow White, making this yet another Snow White remake to come out in recent memory, fits right in. The Hollywood Reporter says that this remake “will expand upon the story and music from the beloved animated classic.”
As Uproxx points out, it’s the third remake of the Snow White story in five years. The other two were Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman. The former starred Lily Collins as Snow White along with Julia Roberts as the queen and Arnie Hammer as the prince. The latter featured Kristen Stewart as Snow White with Charlize Theron as her stepmother, the queen.
This live-action conversion is a continuing trend for Disney, as they’ve been able to string together some well-received hits, including Jungle Book, Maleficent, Cinderella, and Pete’s Dragon. This is of course not to mention the additional movies they have coming out in the same vein: Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin, the last of which is going to be directed by none other than Guy “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Oil Lamps” Ritchie.
Snow White, generally speaking, is a story that’s been remade, reinterpreted, and reinvented along so many different themes and lines. How Disney plans to make their mark on well-trodden ground remains yet to be seen, and it’s perhaps to be expected that they will spare no expense to find a way to do so. After all, if anybody knows anything about live-action remakes of stories told ad infinitum, it’s Disney.
