Despite Petitions, Netflix’s Cancellation of Sense8 Is Final
#SensatesForever
Since Netflix’s original sci-fi series by the Wachowski siblings Sense8 got the official axe, fans have been vocal about their adoration for the show and highly critical of the streaming service’s decision to end what was one of the most inclusive shows of our time.
An outpour of #RenewSense8 postings on social media came after rumors of cancellation appeared, and continued with fan petitions. Unfortunately, while efforts like these have worked in the past, it appears this decision is a final one.
The Sense8 Tumblr posted this statement recognizing the efforts, and thanking fans for the love:
“To our Sense8 family…
We’ve seen the petitions.
We’ve read the messages.
We know you want to #RenewSense8,
and we wish we could #BringBackSense8 for you.
The reason we’ve taken so long to get back to you is because we’ve thought long and hard here at Netflix to try to make it work but unfortunately we can’t.
Thank you for watching and hope you’ll stay close with your cluster around the world.
#SensatesForever”
Actor Brian J. Smith (Will on Sense8), who first fueled the #RenewSense8 campaign, also issued his own thank you message. “I just wanted to take a moment to personally thank all of you for the love and support and fight you’ve put up the last week or so,” he writes. “In the wake of such bad news it was heartening to know that what Sense8 stood for meant so much to so many people.”
Smith also emphasizes that there is “no shady court intrigue” behind the decision which he says was firmly about viewership. While fans are gutted about the way the final season ended, feeling like they were denied a proper ending, the actor says, “Please know that the fight you all put up in trying to save something that you loved will forever be the “final season” of Sense8.
YOU have given the show the ending it deserved. Even if that fight didn’t have a happy ending, it meant something. Don’t ever forget that.”
