Seth Meyers Dismantles Trump’s “Insane” Attempt to Discredit the Tape Where He Brags About Sexual Assault

Another day, another statement from the President of the United States that supposes we’re all as idiotic as his own progeny. Trump is now trying to imply that the “grab ’em by the pussy” recording, wherein he brags about sexually assaulting women—and which he publically apologized for on television—is actually fake news.

In a “Closer Look” segment on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Meyers tackles a wide range of Trump’s latest crap, like his continued support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who now stands accused of sexual predation on several girls when they were underage.

Roy Moore is a man who was quite possibly banned from an Alabama mall for creepily lurking there to skeeze on young women, but Donald Trump supports him because it’s politically expedient, his backbone is made out of Play-Doh, and he probably feels a deep kinship to Moore. Donald Trump loves to assault women both young and mature.

But the coup de grâce of this segment is Meyers’ approach to Trump’s off-the-wall ludicrous assertion—which he’s apparently made more than once and at least once to a member of Congress—that the Access Hollywood tape isn’t authentic. Mind you: we can hear Trump on the tape and see him exiting the bus where it was made. But that’s neither here nor there. HE APOLOGIZED FOR IT. “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize,” Trump said after the tape was released. So who, exactly, isn’t being authentic here?

Trump was made to issue that awkward mea culpa for the tape’s graphic and awful content, which generated a global firestorm of criticism and led to even a few Republicans suggesting that the tape might disqualify him from the election. But that didn’t happen! No, America hates women more than it gives a damn about sexual assault. It was a pretty easy equation in the end.

Seth Meyers is brokering absolutely none of this nonsense.

“Wait,” he starts, “you’re calling that Access Hollywood tape fake? Are you insane?” A beat. “Oh.”

Here’s Meyers’ argument via USA Today, which is, you know, pretty airtight:

“First of all, you admitted it was real,” he said.

“Second, you know how I know it’s real? Because to get off the bus, you did this,” Meyers said, showing a clip of Trump knocking on the bus door to try and make it open.

“That is so dumb that no one would ever think to fake that,” he said.

Meyers continues: “Aside from the fact that Trump is openly sympathetic to fellow sexual predators, he also desperately wants Moore’s vote for his plan to massively cut taxes for corporations and wealthy heirs. Trump and the GOP want to get it done by the end of the year; in fact, Trump keeps trying to sell it as a Christmas gift. I’m sorry, but the last person I would want to get a Christmas present from is Donald Trump. He’s the kind of guy who would give you a framed picture of himself and tell you where to put it.”

Happy holiday season! I’ll repeat here one of the things I was most thankful for on Thanksgiving: Robert Swan Mueller III. All I want for Christmas is a continuing flow of indictments. Or we could do one indictment a day for eight days, which would be a Hanukkah miracle.
