Settlers of Catan Is Going to Be a Movie, a TV Show, or Both

Settlers of Catan is getting some kind of narrative video adaptation! It has to be better than Battleship, right?

Producer Gail Katz (Air Force One, The Perfect Storm) just locked down the film and TV rights for everyone’s favorite tabletop strategy game about creating a settlement on an island and further bolstered her board game adaptation cred; she’s already got the upcoming film Pawn Sacrifice under her belt, which is a biopic for legendary chess player Bobby Fischer.

Whatever form her Catan adaptation takes, it’ll be set within the world of the game. Katz said in a statement,

I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it. The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.

If the movie/TV show/whatever it turns out to be is half as good as good as the Catan‘s Cones of Dunshire parody on Parks and Rec, we’re in. It’s got a heck of a lot more potential than Ouija and Candy Land, at least.
