Emily VanCamp on Sharon Carter, Romantic Subplots, and Fighting Superheroes
Oh, don't be so surprised whose camp she's in.
In an interview with ET about her newest movie, The Girl in the Book, Emily VanCamp shared a few tidbits about Sharon Carter’s role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War film. She touched on things like whose camp Carter falls under (which you should already know), fighting another Marvel hero, and the possible romantic subplot between Carter and Cap. Sidebar: Wow, how the hell is Civil War going to pull off executing all of these disparate plot threads?
Anyway. If you’re the type of person who’s averse to minor spoilers, then be warned now: minor spoilers may lie ahead. Got it? Good. Let’s continue.
When asked about what camp Carter would fall under, VanCamp confirmed what should be obvious to you now: she’s solely camp Cap. She specifically said, “That’s who she is within the universe, I mean, she’s always had his back.” Of course she has! When it comes to romantic interests, she totally gets that the internet’s fandoms may not exactly be rooting for Carter/Cap.
“That’s where it all gets really tricky,” she said. “There are die-hard fans that want to see him with different people. There’s all the different camps, so hopefully people are happy with it.” Whatever it might be, that is–she acknowledged that their possible relationship isn’t something that’s going to explored in depth during Civil War.
To be honest, that’s totally fine with me, because like I said: I have no idea how Civil War is going to handle all these disparate plot threads without feeling like a total mess. There’s so many characters and heroes and things going on that I worry it’ll be hard to follow. But what I do know is that if anyone can pull something like this off, it’s Marvel.
Speaking of tons of characters, VanCamp teased a bit of which hero Carter would be facing off against–this is Civil War, after all. According to her, she’ll be throwing down with none other than Black Widow. SHIELD agent versus Russian spy. Badass versus badass. Hell yes.
There’s a weird subtext with having the two women fight against each other, albeit briefly. It could be my negativity towards situations like these, but I’d love to see each of them taking on more than just each other. That’d definitely be something to see.
All I know is that Civil War is shaping up to be one hell of a movie, and the bar’s set pretty gosh darn high. VanCamp’s interview helps settle some of the questions still in flux, and it definitely eases my worried mind.
