Things We Saw Today: Shawn Levy Will Direct ‘Deadpool 3’
Plus squids, 'The Batman', and more!
Ryan Reynolds is teaming up with Free Guy director Shawn Levy for the long-awaited Deadpool 3. This will mark the third team-up for the duo, whose second film The Adam Project hit Netflix this weekend. Levy has directed several high profile family films, including all three Night at the Museum films, Real Steel, and Date Night. They made the announcement via social media:
Deadpool hasn’t been seen since 2018’s Deadpool 2, which was directed by David Leitch (Hobbs & Shaw). The first Deadpool film was directed by Tim Miller (Terminator: Dark Fate). Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return for the third film, which was previously worked on by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, who are best known for Fox’s animated series Bob’s Burgers.
This will be the first Deadpool film to be released after 20th Century Fox’s merger with Disney, and while the film brings the merc with the mouth back home to Marvel, there is concern that Disney will try to defang the gleefully violent and curse-heavy franchise. And Levy’s hiring is a definite indicator that audiences may encounter a more PG-13 Deadpool. It’s the same concern that is share by fans of Marvel’s Netflix’s series, which have moved to Disney+. Of course, the Deadpool films were massively successful, so Disney probably won’t tamper with the content too much. But we’ll have to wait and see if Reynolds and Levy attempt to clean up Deadpool’s act. Fingers crossed that Deadpool 3 captures the same filthy magic of the first two films.
