Sherlock’s Irene Adler Isn’t Sure How Doctor Who Fans Would Handle A Female Doctor

I'll Allow It

A while back we brought you a story in which British actress Helen Mirren shared her enthusiasm about wanting to learn how to regenerate and become the next Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who. As cool as that is to think about, it’s probably not going to happen. However, another woman has thrown her hat in the ring. Sherlock star Lara Pulver. She’s just really worried Whovians won’t want her.

There was a rumor floating around a while back that Pulver was already set to take on the role of the Doctor after Matt Smith leaves the show from an anonymous informant who told the press she would be the next Doctor as of the 50th anniversary episode in 2013.

There wasn’t any sort of confirmation on that but the connection wasn’t hard to believe when you consider Pulver starred in the second season of Sherlock, created by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. So why is this news creeping up again now? The actress spoke to Digital Spy about the notion.

“Steven and I have both said we thoroughly enjoyed working together, and then there was me being in Wales so the media put two and two together,” she said of the previous rumors.

But the actress had mixed feelings on whether or not she’d be excited to be the first woman to play The Doctor because of the fans. “Yes and no. Not if it meant the end of the Doctor Who franchise, because the fans aren’t keen on it.”

Fair enough, I’d say. Though personally, I’m keen on the idea. And so is Doctor Who/Torchwood star John Barrowman who went on record saying he thinks the next Doctor should be a woman.

What do you think? It is not out of the realm of possibility in the show itself but could you accept the Doctor as a woman? Either Pulver specifically or someone else?
