Simon Pegg Had More to Do With Star Wars: The Force Awakens Than We May Have Realized
The bonds of nerdery run deep: J.J. Abrams and Simon Pegg have worked together with modern takes on classic sci-fi before, but Pegg’s minor role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be just one small part of his contributions to the movie.
And hopefully, the Star Wars sequel will be better for it, as Abrams says Pegg wasn’t afraid to offer constructive criticism in an Entertainment Weekly interview:
He was a sounding board. He would drop by the set because he wanted to, and when he could, he would help … We could talk about things, and he was a perfect combination of incredibly smart screenwriter, fan of the series, critical fan of the series, and friend of mine—but not just blindly supportive. He was an honest, critical friend. And he wasn’t so close to it that he became immune to things. He would come in with fresh eyes and very smart ideas. He’s one of a handful of people along the way that has been really priceless.
It can be helpful as an artist to have a peer to talk to with a bit more distance from a project than yourself but still such a high level of emotional and critical investment in the material as Pegg has in Star Wars. However, everyone‘s got their own strong opinions about the way future Star Wars movies should go, so it’ll be interesting to see how Pegg’s input influences the final product—maybe we’ll hear some more out of Disney’s D23 convention tomorrow!
