Legally Blonde Writers and Cinderella Producer Team Up On Sister Act Remake For Disney
Proving that female-led comedies could become A HABIT. (#SorryNotSorry)
Holy Female Powerhouse Comedies, Batgirl! Disney is currently developing a remake of Sister Act, the 1992 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg that managed to make church music really, really cool. You wore that soundtrack out. You know you did.
I’ll admit it – my first reaction was “Ugh! Another remake?” But there are so many things to love about this project. First, the plot is being kept tightly under wraps, and there’s no word on whether or not Goldberg will be coming on board for it. So, it’s actually unclear if this is a straight-up remake of the original, or another installment in the story. This could be something new!
Second, the writers are a female duo – Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah – who are responsible for such awesome, female-centric fare as Legally Blonde, Ella Enchanted, and 10 Things I Hate About You. They know what they’re doing.
Third, it’s being produced by another woman – Allison Shearmur – who produced the hit Cinderella remake for Disney! (PS – it made $532 million worldwide; because people hate films with female leads, amirite?)
And lastly, the film requires a mostly-female cast! There are so many possibilities for casting amazing, talented actresses here! And while we’re at it, some diverse women, too – different ethnicities, different abilities/bodies, and yes, different sexual orientations! The originals had Whoopi and Lauryn Hill, and Kathy Najimi repping the big girls, and there was the one Latina nun who sang with an accent, but there can always be more, right? Make it happen, ladies!
Who do you think would be great to cast in a new Sister Act film? Inquiring minds want to know!
