If you like werewolves, pizza, and Zazie Beetz, have I got the trailer for you. The first trailer for Slice dropped, a supernatural horror comedy about the employees of pizza joint Pizza Perfect, who unwittingly face off against evil when they find out their pizza place sits on top of a gateway to Hell. Sounds like a Troublemeat Palace.

The film features Chance the Rapper (in his film debut), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Joe Keery (aka Steve Harrington in Stranger Things) and Paul Scheer (The League). After a pizza delivery driver gets murdered, the employees band together to solve the case and find the killer. Along the way, they encounter ghosts, werewolves, and the living dead. The film is written and directed by frequent Chance the Rapper collaborator Austin Vesely, who has directed several of the rapper’s music videos, including “22 Offs,” “Brain Cells,” “Juice,” “Sunday Candy,” and “Angels.”

Vesely first envisioned Slice as a short film after he got drunk and jotted down the premise “Person orders pizza to houses. Kills the driver.” The idea was briefly set up as a television pilot, before it was ultimately turned into a film. Vesely discussed the film in an interview with Pigeons and Planes, saying:

“People ask me often if the film is really scary. I hope it has its moments but it’s more of a comedy for me. Tonally, I was really inspired by Twin Peaks, if that says anything. I studied Paul Thomas Anderson’s movies to figure out how to balance multiple narratives. TV shows as well, like Twin Peaks, to discover how to establish a sense of place. I guess this movie is like Magnolia with ghosts. Just kidding. Kind of.”

The trailer, stylish and silly, promises what looks to be a goofy horror comedy romp. Zazie Beetz, fresh off her scene-stealing role as Domino in Deadpool 2, deserves a leading role worthy of her talents. And while Chance the Rapper only appears briefly in the trailer, he makes a solid, funny impression.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited to see Slice?
