This SNL Sketch About The Shape of Water Fish Man and Adam Driver Was Cut for Time
John Mulaney hosted SNL over the weekend where he delivered a hilarious monologue and acted in some great sketches, my personal favorite being the absolutely perfect “Diner Lobster“. The SNL Youtube account also shared a couple clips that were cut for time, like “Wedding Toast” which features Mulaney as a groom who slowly realizes over the course of his best man’s toast/song that his wife (Cecily Strong) and friend (Luke Null) and Jack White probably have something going on.
Sometimes it’s baffling to see what clips the show cuts for time, like when the internet agreed that “My Little Step Children” featuring Natalie Portman was one of the funniest things SNL has produced in recent years. It’s another mystery why another
The Shape of Water‘s Fishman trying to strive for artistic fulfillment while fighting off jealousy and feelings of inadequacy as he watches others succeed. The Fishman named Fishman (Kyle Mooney), is receiving some great offers after his performance in the critically acclaimed movie. (Specifically, Scorsese’s Fishfellas.)
However, Fishman has decided to pursue his photography instead—though he finds little to no success. Meanwhile, his other Fishman friend named Roger (Mulaney) has snagged the role in Fishfellas, gotten married to Adam Driver, and is hosting SNL. (This sketch is worth it alone for setting up Roger’s “I’m a swimmer, he’s a Driver, together we’re two-thirds of a triathlon!” joke at his SNL monologue.) Fishman spirals out of control.
A tale of artistic endeavor, friendship, and redemption, “Fish Dreams” will touch your soul.
