I’m So Glad To See Longtime Tails Voice Actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey Getting Some Love in These New Sonic 2 Movie Posters

Ready 2 Kick Tail!

New character posters have been released for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 live-action movie. While it is, technically, three posters, it’s still the perfect way to spend this 2-22-22 Twosday as the movie continues to embrace this “two” theme throughout its marketing campaign.

Not only do we have the iconic duo of Sonic and Tails coming together on the big screen for the first time, the logo—and puns that follow—is using the number “2” wherever possible, complete with two tails to represent one Miles “Tails” Prower.

The posters themselves are way past cool, showing Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles getting ready for whatever lies ahead. Each character gets his own cheeky, two-based catchphrase, and if you look at the movie’s Twitter account you’ll see even more use of the number—with Tails, at least.

Tails would definitely believe in family, by the way.

Give voice actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey her flowers

I absolutely love each of these posters, but I was especially happy to see voice actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey being credited and given her very own poster. Both Ben Schwartz and Idris Elba are new to the Sonic franchise, lending their voices to their characters in the Sonic movie universe (and doing a great job, I say as I wait for Sonic to get “Blue Justice” trademarked).

O’Shaughnessey, however, has been voicing Tails since 2014 and is his current voice actress in the video games along with the two seasons of the animated series Sonic Boom.

Conversely, she’s also been voicing Sonic character, Charmy, since 2010, so she’s got a long history with this franchise. Also, if you’re an anime nerd like me, you’ll recognize her from series like Digimon and Naruto, just to name a few.

It was a pretty big deal when she was cast as Tails in the movie, and I will admit to fangirling quite a bit when the first film not only revealed that Tails was coming, but I recognized his voice as the one I’d gotten attached to during these last 8 years.

Tails meant that we were getting more Sonic characters and lore on the big screen, and knowing that a longtime voice actress of the character got to be a part of that was fantastic.

Why this credit is such a big deal

If you go to the Tails poster tweet you’ll notice a number of voice actors not only congratulating O’Shaughnessey but commenting about how nice it is to see her getting credited.

This is because voice actors don’t always get the same amount of credit on-screen actors get when it comes to movie releases, even if they’re playing key characters in the film. For example, during the marketing campaign for Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, there were trailers that wouldn’t credit any of the voice actors except for Zendaya as Lola Bunny because, well, Zendaya is Zendaya. No disrespect to her, of course, but it was a bad look on Warner Brothers’ part to only have her name attached to a character instead of the other voice actors doing their part.

I should note that this was updated later:

This is just one example of moments where it feels like studios keep holding on to this “need big names to get people in theaters” matra as if voice actors portraying iconic characters won’t do that very thing. If you’re going to name the actors portraying the main characters of your film, that should also include the voice actors – and not just the one that you feel has the biggest star power.

Voice actors are stars, too.

There was a bit of concern about this being the case when a new Sonic movie poster was released that didn’t have O’Shaughnessey’s name on it, but seeing these individual posters with her being included is a fantastic showing of giving voice actors the credit they deserve. She’s been Tails for a long time, and Tails is, clearly, playing a big part in this movie, so she should be up there with Ben Schwartz and Idris Elba.

I can’t wait to hear her on opening day.
