That Little Viral Video Girl Who Sang “Super Bass”? She’s In Into The Woods
And So It Begins
You remember Sophia Grace, right? She became a viral star after singing Nicki Minaj‘s “Superbass” with Rosie, her likewise pink-tutu’d compadre.
Now she’s breaking out of the viral star scene and signing on to do some serious film work: she’s going to be in the new Into the Woods movie.
So who is she playing? Why is Johnny Depp in this banner? What will become of the little British girl in this famously dark musical? Head under the cut to find out.
We’ve got our Little Red.
Sophia Grace will be playing the precocious (and later, kinda bloodthirsty) little girl who was just on her way to deliver some food to her ailing grandmother. She’ll be playing opposite Depp, who was cast as the Wolf. It’s more than a little creepy, considering the sexual undertones of their exchange in the play and the fact that Sophia Grace is 10 years old and Depp is 50. I guess that’s supposed to be creepy, though?
The rest of the production looks like this:
Into the Woods tells the story of the Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt), who make a deal with an evil witch (Meryl Streep) in order to conceive. Their journey into the woods brings them face-to-face with many famous fairy tale characters, including Red Riding Hood (Brownlee), The Wolf (Johnny Depp), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), and Jack (Les Miserables’ Daniel Huttlestone) and his magical beans.
The play is an incredibly smart inversion of classic fairytale stereotypes, and is notably one of the darkest plays about children’s stories that exists. Making this story Disney-friendly is not going to be easy, if possible. Let’s just hope that the film doesn’t stick only to the optimistic and Pollyanna-esque ending of act one, and goes beyond that ending to the second act, which is the crux of the narrative but also happens to be where many of the darker elements of the story come to life.
Either way, we’ll be seeing Sophia Grace on the big screen soon enough.
