‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Delayed Until 2023

Spider-fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next entry in Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-verse. The highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been pushed to June 2023. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was originally set to premiere in October 2022, but has now been delayed another 8 months. Producer Chris Miller tweeted “More time to make it great” with a spider emoji.

The reasons for the delay have not been revealed, but its likely a technical one, given the complex animation and design of the series. It may also be a financial decision to position the film during the summer blockbuster season. Either way, we have high hopes for the film, given its gorgeously animated and moving predecessor.

Across the Spider-Verse sees Shameik Moore return as Miles Morales, who is invited into another multiverse adventure by his pal Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld). Together, they will face off against Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Jake Johnson will be reprising his role as Peter B. Parker, and new addition Issa Rae will voice Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. The film will be a two-parter, with Sony Animation simultaneously working on Part Two, which will be released on March 29, 2024.

In addition to both chapters of Across the Spider-Verse, Sony is developing Spider-Women, a female-driven spinoff that will follow three generations of Spider-Women, focusing on Gwen Stacy, Cindy Moon / Silk, and Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman. The spinoff will be set up by the Across the Spider-Verse films.

In the meantime, if you’re craving more multiverse shenanigans you buy the Spider-Man: No Way Home Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital HD, which dropped last week in stores everywhere. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is also available for rent and purchase pretty much everywhere. And of course, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hit theaters on May 4.
