Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Trailer Is the Incredibly Fun Spider-Man We Need Right Now
While Sony’s still floundering to get a Spider-Man extended universe going in live action (hi, Venom!) after a massive false start with Amazing Spider-Man 2′s attempted “Sinister Six” setup, they seem to be well on their way in the animation department. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is set to finally bring Miles Morales to the big screen, following his entry into Marvel’s main comics universe, and that looks like just the Spider-Man we need right now.
That’s not to say that Tom Holland hasn’t been great as Peter Parker in Marvel and Sony’s crossover Spider-Man deal, but not only does Into the Spider-Verse finally move well beyond the Spider-Man story we’ve now been told three different ways in the span of a little over 15 years, it really embraces a comic book feel, including a particular character appearance at the end of the trailer. It’s also just a lot of fun, with plenty of humor, heart, and action all packed into the few minutes of footage we’ve got in this new trailer, which also looks great, with a style that makes its 3D animation look a bit like stop motion.
The only downside is that it really just makes us wish even more that Miles Morales could make his way into Marvel’s cinematic universe. The character was first introduced way back in August 2011, and he’s only grown in popularity since, which is why he originally made the jump from Marvel’s “Ultimate” universe into the main line of Marvel comics. The animated Spider-flick has snared itself a fittingly impressive voice cast, with Shameik Moore as Miles Morales; Jake Johnson as a particularly haphazard Peter Parker; Liev Schreiber as Kingpin; Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen; Mahershala-freakin-Ali as Miles’s uncle Aaron; Brian Tyree as Miles’s father, Jefferson; Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’s mother, Rio; and Lily Tomlin as Aunt May.
It hits theaters in December.
