New Rumors Suggest There’s a Mysterio Twist in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Is this why the film is still in Phase 3?

(Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame will follow, as well as potential spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home)

We’re fresh off Avengers: Endgame, and already the MCU speculation train is leaving the station for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Now that the MCU has played with time travel and alternate realities, the hip new rumor is that Mysterio comes from one of these new realities.

The Snap, as Rocket says in Endgame, made Earth the center of a hitherto unseen cosmic event. That could have, feasibly, ripped a hole in dimensions and allowed Mysterio to travel to the MCU’s Earth. It’s twisty, but given how Far From Home is supposed to close out Phase 3, it makes sense that Marvel could try to do something that sets up future cosmic twists and turns for Phase 4.

Will the MCU venture into the multiverse? The Russo brothers seemed to tease that with their take on Steve’s time travel shenanigans at the end of Endgame, though they and the screenwriters can’t agree on what happened. If Marvel hasn’t quite figured out time travel and alternate realities for the big event that was Endgame, can we really expect them to introduce the concept in Far From Home?

Opening up the concept of alternate realities could tie into the coming Marvel What If show, that will explore multiple realities and alternate universes. It could also set up another cosmic Big Bad for our heroes to fight in a future event movie. Still, something about these rumors doesn’t seem right to me, but I was super wrong about Endgame, so I could be super wrong here.

There are also rumors that Tony Stark will also appear in Far From Home, as visions conjured up by Mysterio to taunt Peter. That, to me, seems more likely than Mysterio being from another dimension or reality. Peter is grieving the loss of his mentor, and we know that they’re not going to brush that under the rug given how big of a role Tony played in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Another point to a possible Tony cameo is the fact that it will close out Phase 3. Tony began the franchise, and it makes sense he’d still play a large role in concluding the Infinity Saga. It would be a way to finally write him out for good, make audiences cry, and give Peter some closure.

Given that we only have one teaser to go on, it’s impossible to say what might be accurate spec. We know Mysterio and Peter seem to be working together for part of the film, and that Fury, Maria Hill, and Happy will all crash Peter’s school trip. Whether we’ll get cosmic with Far From Home or if Peter’s adventures will be a little more earthly, we can’t say. Still, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a twist in this film that both closes out Phase 3 and sets up the future of the MCU. This wouldn’t be the saga’s epilogue for no good reason.

What do you think of these rumors? Do you think Mysterio is from another dimension? Let us know in the comments!
