Kevin Feige Says Marvel Has the Standalone Spidey Movies Under Control—Their Control
In case you couldn't tell by the title.
Everyone’s understandably nervous about how the joint Spider-Man venture between Sony and Marvel will turn out, and not just because the character has already gotten a recent reboot, which makes going for it again so soon seem ill-advised. Spidey’s movies have had pretty big ups and downs (from Spider-Man 2 to the mess that was Amazing Spider-Man 2), but this time, it seems that Marvel is calling the shots, so maybe we can start to get optimistic.
We already knew Marvel had to have some input on the character, since he’ll be part of the MCU and appear in Captain America: Civil War (and Robert Downey Jr. will appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming), but the extent to which Marvel was controlling the new, Tom Holland iteration of the character has been kind of an unknown—until now. In an interview with HeyUGuys at Civil War‘s London premiere, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said,
Well, I’ve known all those people for very long. Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman, who runs Sony now, I’ve known for years. So it’s been great. I mean they really are supportive in allowing us to make the creative decisions to make that movie, but they’ve been great partners, and uh, so far so good on that movie.
So that answers that question. Marvel’s got creative control, and Sony is facilitating bringing their vision to life, which sounds just perfect to me. Feige also reiterated earlier statements from within Marvel that it’s no accident that our new Spider-Man is so young, and that’s how they’re differentiating him from Marvel’s existing stable of movie heroes as well as his previous iterations. Peter Parker didn’t make it past the first half of Spider-Man without graduating high school, and while Amazing Spider-Man may have kept him there until the second movie, he didn’t exactly seem like a real teenager with a real teenage life, so hopefully Marvel will do better on that front.
