Live. Laugh. Love. Leave No Evidence? Who Is the Forger Family in ‘Spy x Family’?

Anya deserves all of the peanuts.

This anime season saw the premiere of the highly anticipated Spy x Family, a comedic series that combines my love of spies, assassins, and fake families with a telepathic child who makes the best faces. While the first subtitled episode premiered on Crunchyroll last week, dub watchers will be happy to know that they only have to wait one more day before checking out the antics of the Forger family.

But who is the Forger family? What has brought them together? And will they ever tell each other the truth about who they are?

Loid Forger: the dad who lies

(Tatsuya Endo/Shueisha, SPY x FAMILY Project)

Codenamed “Twilight” in the spy world, Loid Forger is the name this mysterious man is using for his current mission: Operation Strix. Tasked with spying on a man named Donovan Desmond, who is a great threat to a truce that’s keeping the East and the West at peace, the only way Twilight can get close to Desmond is by infiltrating an elite school called Eden Academy. This requires him to, somehow, acquire a child and pose as their father. To top it all off, the school expects him to have a wife, too. Operation Fake Family is now underway!

Yor Forger: the mom who can’t cook

(Tatsuya Endo/Shueisha, SPY x FAMILY Project)

Codenamed “Thorn Princess,” Yor actually is this woman’s name. However, unbeknownst to Twilight, she’s a deadly assassin! She poses as an employee at Berlint City Hall, and thanks to her being the “ripe old age” of 27 (yes, I’m rolling my 38-year-old eyes right now), she’s told that she “looks suspicious” since she’s still single. Lucky for her, Twilight is in need of a wife. Yor is under the impression that Twilight (or rather, Loid) is a regular guy with a child, meaning that she has no idea that he’s a spy. It’s fine, since he doesn’t know that she’s an assassin.

Anya Forger: the daughter who knows all

(Tatsuya Endo/Shueisha, SPY x FAMILY Project)

Twilight adopts Anya after she impresses him by doing a difficult crossword puzzle, thinking that she’s a highly intelligent child. However, Anya simply read Twilight’s mind because she has telepathic abilities. This means that she finds out that Twilight is a spy on a mission. She also finds out that Yor is an assassin. Basically, she’s the only one in the family who knows the whole truth, but she’s content with her situation because she just wants to have a family to call her own.

The dynamic between the Forger is chaotically wholesome, as Twilight tries to NOT catch feelings for his fake family, but they’re just too adorable to resist. Currently, in the anime, we’ve only met Twilight and Anya, but the next episode is looking to introduce Yor and complete the “we’re family because it’s convenient for me, but I actually care a lot about you” setup.

Oh, and there is one more member of the family, but I don’t wanna spoil the surprise for anime watchers.

Spy x Family is currently airing Saturdays on Crunchyroll. If you’re excited for more, the manga is available over at Viz.
