Music Group Creates Protest Music Video for Standing Rock, Urges Us to Fight Even Though it Might Hurt
The fight to protect the water at Standing Rock from the development of the Dakota Access Pipeline continues as ever, despite recent news that easements have been granted by the Army Corps of Engineers to continue construction as planned. As such, people continue to find their way to Standing Rock to join the protest. Trapdoor Social, an activist-centered music group, has been part of the protection efforts, and they just recently released a music video titled “Never Stop Listening,” chronicling not only their experiences within camp, but they also highlight the fight that has yet to come.
In a statement released with the video, the band explained, writing:
‘Never Stop Listening’ is about fighting for what you believe in, even when it hurts. I know that feeling of not wanting to read the news only to learn what sad turn environmental policy (for example) has taken overnight… but to stay engaged in the fight, we must first stay informed; we must vigilantly study the world’s problems and the best ways to solve them.
The music itself is quite something, and has elements of post-rock Explosions in the Sky/Maybeshewill/Sigur Rós-type feels. The lyrics speak to life within the camp, and serve to highlight the message of fighting for what you know in your heart is right.
The latter elements of that message are especially poignant to the continuing struggle against Trump’s regime administration. We’ve seen many a setback, what with the appointment for Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education and the continued assault on equal rights in the name of religious freedom. It hurts to fight these days, it really does, but in spite of that pain, the fight is still worth fighting. It is still the good fight, because there are just so many things at stake that we can’t give up, not like this.
Maybe this song will help you find a renewed sense of vigor, another reason to keep fighting.
