Star Wars 1313 Could Happen, Remains the Schrodinger’s Cat of Star Wars Games
Remember Star Wars 1313? That one game that was supposed to, uh, bring balance to the Star Wars gaming universe? That is, until it was unceremoniously frozen in development carbonite by Disney’s purchase of Lucasilm? According to an interview between /Film and Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s head Jedi, Star Wars 1313 may yet still live–just like Boba Fett, upon whom the game is based. Fitting, no?
Kennedy said:
There was 1313 the game… we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold. And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to do something.
It’s kind of non-committal, I agree. “Wanting to do something” and “actually doing something” are two very different things. However, the suggestion that it’s still something they’re looking at lends a bit of hope to the situation. It’s nice to know it’s not just sitting in a dark corner of the proverbial Jabba’s palace. But still, 1313 is something that’s been fluctuating between coming back and, uh, not coming back for quite some time now.
Forgive me if I sound like I’m being defeatist–I want to see this game made! After all, that trailer from Gamescom 2012 still sends shivers down my spine, and it’s not because it reminds me of Mass Effect (though it does).
No, it’s the fact that Disney has a (positive, fairly productive) habit of never actually throwing ideas away. When it comes to Imagineering, no ideas are ever actually tossed out. They’re simply shelved until they’re useful again. I suspect much of the same is happening here with all of the LucasArts properties.
After all, they’ve licensed Double Fine to remake some of their classics, including Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle. One has to wonder how long it’ll take for them to see that 1313 is something that the fans were incredibly excited for? More importantly: is that excitement enough to make them want to dive back into the pile?
