The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun To Join Legend of Korra Cast
Officially Official
That’s right, folks: Steven Yeun will be voice acting for Book 2 of Legend of Korra!
Head under the cut for the who/what/where/when/and potential “why”s!
His character is named Wan. His story takes place 10,000 years before the events of Legend of Korra, because his story is that of becoming the first Avatar. He’s slated to appear in two episodes called “Beginnings 1&2”, so chances are that getting in touch with Wan and her other past lives will be part of Korra’s spiritual Avatar training. Whether or not the story is told completely in flashbacks (i.e. how Korra remembered her experiences as Aang) or in a spirit-world rendezvous as per what happened in ATLA with Aang and Roku remains to be seen.
However, Geekosystem makes a good point about some potential hesitations for a “meet the first Avatar” plot line:
As a Buffy fan I’ve been burned by “meetings between very first chosen ones and current chosen ones” before — you know I love you, Joss, but that whole Primitive First Slayer thing was kind of cringeworthy — but casting Yeun is enough to make me hopeful that the Korra writers know what they’re doing.
There are ways in which this “first chosen” trope can go wrong, and Buffy is a good example. We will have to trust the writers! They seem like they know what they’re doing, so we’ll have to wait and see.
