What a time to be alive

Last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Donald Glover, was so damn strong that by the end of the show we had almost forgotten about it’s star-studded political cold open…almost. But it’s pretty impossible to forget a historic, unparalleled moment like the President of the United States’ mistress playing herself on the legendary late night series. We are truly in the darkest, most bizarre timeline.

With the unceasing tornado of news that is this current political climate, SNL had plenty of stories to choose from, and it deftly touched on several recent scandals surrounding the White House. The cold open featured Ben Stiller reprising his role as embattled Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, juggling a conference call between several members of the Trump administration. Alec Baldwin returned with his signature take on Trump, and he was joined by Martin Short as Dr. Harold Bornstein, the flamboyant physician who wrote Trump’s overly effusive health report.

They were joined by Scarlett Johansson and Jimmy Fallon, reprising their roles as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, with Fallon imitating Kushner’s voice as a high-pitched squeak of indignity. Johansson’s performance as Ivanka, which she showcased in her Complicit commercial spoof, perfectly captures the studied indifference of Trump’s favorite child.

Cast members reprised their well-known impressions, with Aidy Bryant returning as Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Leslie Jones embodying the still bitter Omarosa Manigault. Beck Bennett trotted out his Mike Pence, who mistook the conference call for a private party chat line, while Cecily Strong’s Melania asked if she could testify against her own husband. Kate McKinnon continued her streak of winning impressions, adding a squirrelly Rudy Giuliani to her already impressive collection of Trump toadies.

But this star-studded ensemble paled in comparison to the biggest get of the night, with Stormy Daniels herself popping towards the end of the sketch. Daniels played herself opposite Baldwin’s Trump, where she called on the president to resign from office. Baldwin’s Trump kept trying unsuccessfully to negotiate with Daniels, saying “I solved North and South Korea, why can’t I solve us?” Daniels quickly replied with, “I know you don’t believe in climate change but a storm’s a coming baby.”
