What Subscriptions Have Allowed Us to Do This Week, and Why We Encourage You to Help
Hello, dear readers! Those of you who’ve subscribed—which we greatly appreciate—already get a daily newsletter about, among other things, what’s going on behind the scenes around here, but I want to take another opportunity to show everyone what we’ve been doing lately to improve The Mary Sue’s content and make a case for why you should consider subscribing to help us keep the site on this track.
After all, the main goal of the subscription, from our perspective, is to give us the financial freedom to write what we want to write and what we think is important—in addition to the fun (and sometimes not so fun) things we find floating around the Internet to share with you—and our five full-time writers work every day to make good on that promise, with help from our contributors. Here’s a look at the original content we’ve produced since our latest update last week:
- On the Department of Justice, North Carolina, and Transgender Prisoners
- Exclusive: Kasey Rose-Hodge on Her Internet-Breaking Essay About the Predators Women Face
- On the Design and Ethics of Virtual Reality and Immersive Experiences
- 6 Upcoming Female-Driven Shows I’m Already Hyped For
- How Captain America: Civil War Romanticizes the Realities of Drone Warfare
- Orphan Black #CloneClub Recap: “The Scandal Of Altruism”
- The weekly “Pull Wisely” series
- Our The Deadly Sue series
- Teresa is working right now on a feature story about Archie comics
Each of these posts took a significant amount of time from a member of our small staff over the past week—time we can only afford to take if we don’t have to chase traffic. We’ve also been taking extra time to make our daily news articles more substantive, and our paid contributors have been doing great work:
- Comics Fans Respond to Captain America’s “Big Secret”
- Exclusive: Preview Clip From “Barn Mates,” Episode 4 of Steven Universe: In Too Deep
- WTF Comics Club Reads: The Sandman: Endless Nights
- The Legend of Korra Newbie Recap: Series Finale!
- Orphan Black Science Recap: “The Scandal of Altruism”
- Deep-sea Ecologist Rewatches seaQuest DSV: Episode 10, “Bad Water”
- Irrational Love: Fandom Doesn’t Have to Make Sense
- Review: The Nice Guys, the First Great Comedy of Summer
- Why Orphan Black May Be the Best Show on Television
- Wynonna Earp Recap: Episode 7, “Walking After Midnight”
It’s been a busy week, and it’s all been made possible by our subscribers. We like the site a whole lot better with all this original content and thoughtful coverage, but we need your help to keep it up. If you can spare $4.99 a month to support us while we make The Mary Sue better for everyone—on top of the subscriber benefits of an ad-free site, an exclusive newsletter, and monthly live chats with the editors—please consider subscribing and helping to make this site the best it can be.
