Suicide Squad Has High Premiere Turnout From Women, Which Shouldn’t Be Surprising
Because women like superhero movies too!
Suicide Squad premiered just prior to the weekend–and in spite of the underlying conflict that could be titled Critics V. Fans: Dawn of Reviews, the film appears to be doing well in terms of the Friday-into-weekend box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Now, there’s a lot about the film that has been mixed, and its low ratings amongst critics have been a hot topic of conversation–even prompting some journalists to ask some Suicide Squad cast members for their thoughts, though I’m not sure why anyone thought that was a good idea. Cara Delevingne, who plays Enchantress in the film, was quoted as saying that she didn’t think “[critics] like superhero movies.” Indeed, the “we made this for the fans” answer was the most popular one given in response to the negative critical reviews–currently, the film stands at 26% on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
Regardless of whether or not the critics liked it, however, the fans are coming out in droves to support the movie with their dollars–and women made up 46% of Friday’s audience based on exit polls, which was reported as being something of a surprise.
Perhaps poll results have typically dictated otherwise based on the audience make-up of previous superhero movie installments, but women have definitely indicated that they’ve been supporters of the genre. Ryan Reynolds has said that they were among the biggest supporters of Deadpool in its early stages. The response of female audience members to Suicide Squad was also more positive overall, based on post-viewing polls. So… maybe it’s time to accept that women like superhero movies?
