Suicide Squad International Trailer Hits the Right Notes

The new international trailer for Suicide Squad was just released, and if I’m being perfectly honest with myself, I’m kind of having fun watching it. There’s plenty to like about the cast, who all seem like they’ve got some amazing chemistry together. Moreover, I’m really freaking glad that we’re continuing to move away from the grimdark tone that blankets so many other superhero flicks.

This trailer’s got some rough edges, too. Jared Leto showing up, for one, especially considering his performance in light of his “no rules method acting.” And okay, maybe I was a little overzealous with saying we’ve moving away from the grimdark tones. They’re still there, at least in this trailer, though perhaps maybe a little less visible. At least the thing doesn’t feel like an extended edgelord-esque movie, so that’s saying something, right?

At the very least, this trailer’s got me pretty stoked for the movie in spite of the weird stunts Leto’s pulled in the name of “bringing the Joker to life.”

Suicide Squad comes to theaters on August 5th.
