Never Give Up, Never Surrender: Suicide Squad Negative Reviews Motivate Justice League Cast
You undoubtedly already know that Suicide Squad wasn’t exactly well received by critics. While some fans beg to differ, it seems that the cast of Justice League is taking those criticisms against the comic book ensemble movie to heart. Talking to MTV News, Ezra Miller (who plays Barry Allen/The Flash) said of the negative reviews, “You needn’t look any further than the ‘Suicide Squad’ director and cast response to the negative reviews to feel how negative critiques motivate us.”
Miller goes on to explain that a bit of compromise does exist when it comes to putting creative work out into the world. “Ultimately, we can’t base anything on [the critical response],” he said. “As artists, we aim to please absolutely everybody with our work, but we also know that we have to keep expressing ourselves as best as we can express ourselves.” It’s true, while the cast and crew are beholden to expectations from studios and an ever-increasing pressure from fans, at the end of the day, they need to be able to do something they’re proud of. It’s about finding that balance between being proud of the work you create and pleasing those who come to see it—or, perhaps more importantly, those who come to pay for it.
While we’d all love to live in a world where everyone can get what they want, that just isn’t where we are right now. I find it heartening that the Justice League crew is taking the negative reviews as motivation, rather than becoming bitter and jaded about it. It’s with that kind of never-give-up attitude that they could perhaps pull DC out of its movie rut. Or, perhaps, these could just be words in the end, and it’ll be more of the same. But hey, you know me: ever the optimist. I remain cautiously hopeful for Justice League, but if Miller’s attitude truly does reflect the entire cast, then maybe we might all be pleasantly surprised.
