Supergirl Adds Odette Annable as Series Regular in a Story Straight Out of the New 52
Now that Supergirl is firmly settled into its home at The CW, the show already has big Season 3 plans, including a version of a huge story from Supergirl’s New 52 comic that will deliver next season’s “Big Bad.”
Odette Annable, previously of Pure Genius and House, has been cast as a series regular in the role of Reign on Season 3 of Supergirl.
For those who don’t know the Supergirl comics, Reign is one of the infamous Worldkillers, created by Kara’s father as biological weapons, though he came to regret his part in having created them. They escaped Krypton along with Kara and, having no idea about who they are and where they came from, they followed her to Earth to try and get answers. Stuff goes down. It’s intense.
As reported by Deadline Hollywood, “Though the character is based on the comics, the costume for Annable’s TV character will be different from the DC version.” Thank goodness. I was already grateful that Supergirl’s hideous costume and boots didn’t follow her onto television.
Costume choices aside, I’m actually really excited that they’re tackling this story, as I remember really enjoying it when I read it, though I know a lot of DC fans weren’t thrilled. You can check out my full feelings on the subject over at Supergirl Radio, where I and co-host Rebecca Johnson discussed the trade paperback Supergirl, Vol. 1: Last Daughter of Krypton, in which Reign’s introduction can be found. (the discussion starts at around 13:00)
Meanwhile, Supergirl Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg is really excited, both to be working with Annable and to be bringing this story to life. He says, “Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Odette for years. We are beyond excited to have her join our cast in the scary, powerful and heartbreaking role of Reign.”
“Powerful” and “heartbreaking?” I’m already excited! What do you think? Are you excited to see how this story will play out in National City? Lemme hear your thoughts in the comments!
