There’s Something Strange About This Beautiful Nintendo Switch Game Trailer
Despite a full Nintendo Switch reveal and continuing revelations about the new console’s power, we still haven’t seen a lot in the way of actual gameplay footage. Nothing in the original trailer was actually guaranteed as real game footage, and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is really just a Wii U port. Now, we’ve got the trailer for the indie game Seasons of Heaven, but … all may not be as it seems.
While the game looks pretty, its reveal is unusual, considering that Nintendo is keeping everything under wraps until an official Switch presentation next month, and it seems that developers with games in the works for the system are doing the same. With this reveal trailer seemingly jumping the gun, the game’s Switch exclusivity seems like more of a gimmick on the part of the developers than anything else (and look, it’s working), and those pretty graphics apparently aren’t even being produced by a Switch dev kit, but a PC.
Then, there’s the fact that it would be the first game from Any Arts, the development studio founded by ex-UFO hunter Nicolas Augusto. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there are some strange details floating around out there about the studio and its founder, especially the mention in a French article that they don’t have an actual office. Again, that doesn’t necessarily mean a lot when it comes to an indie developer, but it’s worth exercising some caution before getting excited about this footage.
When new consoles are on the horizon, there tends to be some piling on with games that try to latch onto some of the hype but ultimately wind up disappointing as either “shovelware” (think of all the underwhelming games for the original Wii) or non-existent “vaporware.” It seems more likely that’s what we’re seeing in this trailer, rather than the Switch’s new killer app.
