Tall, Crumbling Staircase Made of Salt

Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto’s preferred artistic medium is salt, and he built this fairly tall staircase made out of salt bricks not only due to his preference of medium, but to signify loss and ruin, as the staircase crumbles when faced with a simulated earthquake.
The piece is more than just an interesting and incredibly tedious-to-build installation, as the crumbling makes it a bit interactive, at least in that it moves at all. The work holds other significance as well, as salt is often handed out toward the end of funerals in Japan, so mourners can sprinkle it to ward off evil.
