Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Creator Set To Help Write James Cameron’s Avatar Sequel

And So It Begins

James Cameron‘s Avatar sequels have been a topic of conversation since the unbelievably successful first installment was released in 2009, and yet we still haven’t seen the recognizable blue Na’vi of the series in a single sequel, let alone two or three. Still, Avatar will be back, and now Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles creator Josh Friedman has been hired to help write the screenplay for Avatar 2, according to a source at The Wrap.

As the highest grossing film of all time, Avatar will be a tough act to follow. Its sequel will no doubt contain the reliance on 3D visuals that made the movie a must-see four years ago and that continues to haunt us through every big budget film made since. Friedman’s involvement, however,  might provide a sci-fi boost to the franchise. Perhaps Friedman can contribute his previous experience to develop the Avatar universe in the way he expanded the Terminator universe. After all, Avatar could use some expanded mythology to go along with its impressive special effects.

Friedman’s involvement isn’t entirely surprising considering the original Terminator is also a Cameron film.  Still, the writer has extensive experience outside of Cameron’s works, including work on a Locke & Key pilot for Fox, the 2005 version of War of The Worlds, and the short-lived FOX show The Finder. Much of his work has been on action-packed, if not long-lasting, Hollywood projects, so Avatar certainly fits.

Still, the question remains as to when we will be seeing Avatar 2. Four years is certainly a long time to go with little news, especially for this prominent a project. We know that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will likely work on the sequel, and there has been plenty of discussion about the idea that the second film will take place under water, but given how long it has been since the first installment came out, we know relatively little. Plus, James Cameron continues to discuss the series as having two or even three sequels. The second installment is currently set for release in 2015, as is another Terminator film, interestingly enough, but for now we must wait to see what’s in store for Avatar 2.
