As We Descend Further Into Being a Surveillance State, Here’s a New Trailer for The Circle
In Dave Eggers’ The Circle, he explores the ramifications and consequences of an always-connected, always-surveilled society, offering a chilling look into life for a group of people who are fanatically invested in the proliferation of technology into literally every aspect of life. Creepy as hell, right? So one might expect the same from the forthcoming movie of the same name, and judging by this trailer, those expectations are about to be met in stunning A-list ensemble cast fashion.
The film stars Emma Watson as Mae Holland, the book’s protagonist. Her journey takes her from being a customer service rep in a cubicle farm to being… a customer service rep in an open office. Granted, her surroundings are prettier, but they all hide a deeper, darker secret at the heart of The Circle (which, of course, is the name of the tech giant to which she now belongs). Co-starring with Watson are Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Patton Oswalt, and Karen Gillan.
Honestly, I’m having a hard time seeing this movie being underwhelming at all, given this excellent cast. I’ve read the book before, and it was something that got me to re-think the way I engage with and integrate technology into my life. I realize how “hippie testimonial” that sounds, but I really don’t know how else to describe the way the book made me feel. Granted, it’s absolutely packed with Eggers’ somewhat browbeating, heavy-handed style of writing, but as a material lesson, it serves its purpose.
In short, I’m stoked to watch this movie, and the style, the cast, the director, everything seems aligned for this to be a very solid must-see.
Also, if you’re interested in picking the writer/director’s brain, you can find him over on Reddit doing an AMA at 3pm PST!
