The House of El: “Fight or Flight” From the Love Triangle and Monogamy?
"Hey boys, I want you both. I hope that you think that's cool..." - Lady Gaga in The Lonely Island's "3 Way (The Golden Rule)"
Welcome to The House of El, a new video series where I’ll go beyond the Supergirl recap, delve a little into the DC Comics source material and other incarnations of the character, and hone in on a topic from that week’s episode of CBS’ Supergirl that I find interesting, annoying, or that really sticks in my craw. Wherever my “craw” is.
This week, Episode Three of Supergirl‘s first season, “Fight or Flight,” got me thinking about the television trope of The Love Triangle and why it bothers me: both for storytelling reasons and for ideological reasons.
What do you think of the relationship between Kara, James, and Winn that they’re building on Supergirl? Do you think it makes sense, or are you tired of the same ol’-same ol’? And do you think there’s room for the depiction of consensual non-monogamy on television?
Discuss in the comments below! Apologies for the lateness of this installment, which I explain in the video, and I will see you next Thursday! (I promise I’m not spelling what you think I’m spelling. I literally mean there will be another video like this here on Thursday)
