At Last, the Official Moana Trailer Shows Us Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & Auli’i Cravalho’s Unbeatable Chemistry
We’ve had plenty of one-minute teasers for Moana in the past year, and we’ve adored all of them–but today we’ve finally got a glimpse at the full-length official trailer. By the way, if you want to go back and watch said teasers, here’s the first one, the second one, and the third one. All stunning!
In this new full-length trailer, we finally get to see some longer conversations exchanged between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who plays the demigod Maui, and Auli’i Cravalho, who stars as the heroic princess Moana. We also learn that at least one of the narrative arcs in this movie will revolve around Moana forcing the egotistical demigod to take her seriously—even though she is a girl. Based on this clip, he’s going to have some trouble with that last bit.
One of their first conversations here involves Maui reminding Moana that he is the “hero of man”—emphasis on man! Moments later, he tells her he’s not sure that a “little girl” is tough enough to fight monsters and save her people. Moana scowls and shows him the many talents that she has to offer, including her mysterious super-power that allows her to control the sea. We got a glimpse at her power in the second teaser-trailer for this movie, but in this clip, Moana explains it as follows: “The ocean is a friend of mine!” She expresses this by literally giving the ocean a high-five.
There are some great jokes in here that I won’t ruin—the last one in the trailer is delightful. It’s clear even just from this brief glimpse at the plot that The Rock and Auli’i Cravalho have excellent chemistry together.
In between scenes, we also get to hear some bits and pieces of the soundtrack for this movie, which is by Hamilton composter Lin-Manuel Miranda. Speaking of Hamilton, Philippa Soo is also in the cast for Moana, although she doesn’t appear in this trailer … unless those are her lilting stains that I can hear in some of the music in the background (around one minute in)? Tough to tell right now—but I do know that I can’t wait to see more!
