‘The Umbrella Academy’ Renewed for 4th and Final Season
It’s official: The Hargreeves family is coming back for a 4th season, and it has been confirmed that this will be the final season! Fans of Netflix’s hit The Umbrella Academy series have been awaiting this news since season 3 premiered on June 22, 2022. The Umbrella Academy first hit the platform in 2019 and is a TV adaption of the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, following the superpowered Hargreeves siblings as they’re reunited by their father’s passing and have to learn to work together.
The Umbrella Academy is known for ending its seasons on massive cliffhangers, which is why waiting for renewals can be quite anxiety-inducing. Season 2 and season 3 both ended with the timeline being massively changed. In season 2, the Hargreeves’ doings in the 1960s changed the timeline, resulting in them never being born in the present day, and their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), founding the “Sparrow Academy” with different children, instead of the Umbrella Academy.
Meanwhile, the Hargreeves’ existence in a timeline where they … no longer exist kicked off a grandfather paradox that sparked a dangerous kugelblitz that threatened to destroy the world once more. The only chance they had at potentially saving the world was to go along with their father’s suspicious plan to enter a secret portal. It turned out Reginald sought to reset the universe, thus manipulating the timeline, and the world, to his liking. When the reset is complete, the Hargreeveses find themselves with their powers gone, in a world dominated by Reginald and his wife.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 is happening
Fans can now breathe a bit easier knowing that The Umbrella Academy isn’t going to leave them hanging, as season 4 has been officially confirmed. The Umbrella Academy took to its Instagram page to announce the news on August 25, 2022. However, the announcement was slightly bittersweet, as it was also announced that season 4 would mark The Umbrella Academy‘s final season. Check out the announcement below:
Meanwhile, the series creator, Steve Blackman, has already given some hints as to what season 4 will hold.
“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”
In an interview Tudum, Blackman opened up about what season 3’s ending means for season 4’s timeline. Blackman explained that, while Reginald reprogrammed the universe, he didn’t fully finish his process, because he was stopped by Allison. Hence, the Hargreeveses losing their powers wasn’t intentional, but was actually a consequence of the interruption. This also means that there will be other similar “oddities” in the timeline, such as new enemies who were unwittingly created. Check out Blackman’s statement below:
It certainly is. But the siblings are always up for a challenge. This new timeline has been dictated by Hargreeves, who reprogrammed the Universe at the end of the Season 3 finale. But because of Allison’s actions, he didn’t get to finish what he started before Allison pressed the reset button.
So, the siblings losing their powers isn’t going to be the only oddity in this timeline. There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater.
