Remember that time we thought Lady Gaga was a big old stick in the mud for not letting “Weird” Al Yankovic parody “Born This Way”? Never happened, and she has personally approved of the parody, “Perform This Way.”

We really thought you had a better sense of humor, Lady Gaga. Parody Master “Weird” Al Yankovic was ready to start production on a video for the new single off his latest album, which was his take on Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” It was called “Perform This Way” and was about Gaga’s red carpet “performance art” fashions, and it’s funny. Gaga had asked to hear the song before production went forward, and since Weird Al is a stand-up guy (who asks artists for their permission before going forward with his parodies, even though what he does falls under Fair Use), he sent Gaga the song after going through the trouble of producing the audio.
And she turned him down.
Frankly, I’m disappointed. The song is in no way offensive to Lady Gaga, nor to her fans or any of her causes. In fact, Weird Al was prepared to donate any proceeds from the song to the Human Rights Campaign. I really don’t know what the big deal was, but I think this was a rather unfriendly move on Gaga’s part.

UPDATED: All that stuff you just read — please disregard all of it. A.V. Club has confirmed that not only has Lady Gaga not rejected “Perform This Way,” but she never heard it in the first place. And even better: She has approved it for Weird Al’s album.
According to a tweet from [Stephen] Thompson, who spoke to Weird Al, Lady Gaga has personally approved the release of “I Perform This Way” … “Gaga’s manager, Troy Carter, has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what her manager TOLD us), he is now owning up to the fact that he made the decision completely on his own, without any input from Gaga.”
