Creator of The Dreamer Lora Innes has gotten 127 artists together to fight human trafficking at Comic Creators for Freedom. Each artist is tasked with creating an original female character, which will be incorporated into one big picture — of an epic snowball fight. So far, they’ve raised $15,000, and you can add your two cents (or more) by downloading the picture as wallpaper through January 20. (via Geek With Curves)

  • We dare you to try — just try — not to get choked up while reading this story about a big brother sticking up for his younger brother in Game Stop when the younger one tried to buy Mirror’s Edge — which has a female protagonist — and a “girl-colored” controller, and his own father threatened to hit him if he didn’t buy something “manly.” Best. Big. Brother. Ever. (via Geekosystem)
  • Comic publisher Archaia is planning a graphic novel series that will be a prequel to the 1986 movie Labyrinth, which starred yesterday’s birthday boy David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King. Editor-in-chief Stephen Christy says: “It’s the story of how Jareth is brought into the Labyrinth for the first time. So, it doesn’t deal with Sarah, it doesn’t deal with Toby or anything like that.” You know what? We’re not going to fight this. Not a bit. (via Entertainment Weekly)

  • J.J. Abrams says that Star Trek 2 starts shooting this Thursday (!!!) and doesn’t know what all this “Benedict Cumberbatch is playing a villain” talk is all about. Oh, J.J. Abrams. You cheeky monkey! (via MTV Movies Blog)
  • The results of AMC‘s The Walking Dead online survey, “Which Character Are You?” are in, and the character everyone thinks they’d be? Dale. A 70-year-old man in a fishing hat who saves people who don’t want to be saved. Well … okay then.

Alison Bechdel has written a new graphic novel as a followup to Fun Home, Are You My Mother?. In the former, she discussed her relationship with her father, and in this one, it’s all about her mother. That’s not the real news though: the graphic novel, her second book, will get 100,000 printings from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. And that’s a real vote of confidence. (via Comics Beat)
