Things We Saw Today: We Cannot Handle All of This Amazing Star Wars News!
NOT A DRILL!
Disney must have known that the news today was bumming us out, because they have released an OVERWHELMING amount of good news!
First, Rian Johnson will be creating an ALL-NEW TRILOGY. He’ll be writing and directing the films alongside longtime producing partner Ram Bergman (Looper, Brick, The Brothers Bloom, basically everything else we love Johnson for). Sure, we haven’t seen Johnson’s The Last Jedi yet and sure, we’d love if Disney invested in some voices from communities more marginalized than white dudes. But we are STILL EXCITED! Especially after LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that “watching [Johnson] craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career.” (via StarWars.com)
Right on the heels of that news, Disney also announced they are finally creating a live-action Star Wars television show. Of course, they’re doing it on the streaming service we’re STILL UPSET ABOUT, but this is awesome news nonetheless. It’s coming in 2019 alongside three other shows based on existing Disney properties—another Marvel show, Monster’s Inc, and High School Musical. We’re going to guess that between now and 2019 that list will grow, though. (via Polygon)
- In more disappointing news, Guillermo del Toro says his planned stop-motion Pinocchio is now “not happening.” That’s a bummer because the description sounded pretty fantastic. As he explained, “the idea was to do Pinocchio during the ascension of fascism in Italy, with Mussolini. It was a good time to discuss the idea of being a puppet or being a human.” Yeah, I would have liked to have seen that. (via Collider)
- Hey, what’s going on over at Legendary Comics? They haven’t put out a book in months, and Senior VP Bob Schreck has quietly left the company altogether. (via Comics Beat)
- In the ongoing saga of this super weird cult disguised as (most recently) a fake-news-busting journalism endeavor, Smallville’s Allison Mack (best friend of Clark) is reportedly their “second in command.” (via Comic Book Movie)
- This sure seems like it’s been a garbage year full of garbage news. Here are 52 awesome, inspiring things that have happened. We needed this. (via Shondaland)
