AMC’s The Walking Dead Hires Its Third Showrunner, Puts Superglue On All Office Chairs

Just Go With It

We were fairly surprised last December when news broke of The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara leaving the show. Not so much for the decision of course but because this was the second showrunner to exit the popular cable series in as many years. Now a third individual has entered the apocalypse fray and we hope they last the night.

TV Line reported yesterday the show’s supervising producer Scott Gimple is closing a deal to be the next guy in charge of our rag-tag band of survivors and their zombie companions.

They write, “Gimple, whose previous writing credits include NBC’s Chase and ABC’s FlashForward, joined Walking Dead as a producer in Season 2 and was promoted to supervising producer for the current third season. He has penned fiveDead episodes, including this season’s ‘Hounded.'”

Original showrunner Frank Darabont surprised fans when he abruptly left the AMC series in July of 2011 and Mazzara’s exit came after a conflict over where the show should go. According to the joint statement made by him and AMC: “Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer…AMC is grateful for his hard work.  We are both proud of our shared success.”

If Gimple’s deal goes through (AMC has yet to comment), he’ll start as showrunner for Season 4. He’s already been a major player in the series and according to The Beat, has several comic book writing credits to his name. Let’s hope this all works in his favor and we get a more consistent show moving forward.

The Walking Dead returns to wrap up Season 3 on February 10.
