Gillian Anderson Refuses to Let the Sun Set on the X-Files Franchise
Sure. Fine. Whatever.
Sometimes, when people drop hints about a movie adaptation being in the works, I snort derisively. But sometimes, when I might otherwise snort, I instead honestly feel bad for any fans reading the statement, and feel like the people involved should really keep it to themselves until they have concrete information.
I know, I know, a good part of getting movies made is showing that there’s an interest in them, and it’s hard to do that if you don’t tell anybody about them, but… I’m sorry. I just can’t see another X-Files movie getting made until years from now when somebody decides it’s time for a full reboot of the concept.
But hope springs eternal in camp X-Files, as Gillian Anderson related this weekend at the Toronto Fan Expo. According to X-Files News, she when questioned on the status of a third X-Files flick was heard to say: “I met with Chris [Carter, creator of the X-Files] before coming here and it’s looking pretty good.”
You could be forgiven for forgetting that there was, in fact, a second X-Files movie released in 2008, a mere week after The Dark Knight began its box office rampage. The X-Files: I Want to Believe opened to mediocre reviews at best, and didn’t do much to reinvigorate the finished franchise.
Blastr points out that Anderson isn’t the only person up for more X-Files. Co-star David Duchovny is also holding out hope:
I would love to do another film, or more. I think we’re all game for it. I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more [enthusiastic]. Here’s a homegrown property that you don’t have to go buy, like #$@!-in’ Green Lantern or something, to make it. Here you’ve got an actual action franchise that’s your own. It’s weird to me, but I’m not an executive. I don’t know if they made the Green Lantern either, but I’m just using that as an example of, “Why make that film? Why not make a homegrown franchise that is excellent, and that has proven to be excellent and interesting?” I don’t get it, but that’s not my business.
Come on, David. I bet Fox Mulder would know that Green Lantern is a DC Comics character and therefore wholly owned by Warner Bros. Fox has got the X-Men, though, so how about a crossover? In fact now that I come to think about it, and Google it, I can’t believe nobody’s made an official X-Men/X-Files crossover. Fox, get on this.
