New Tina Fey-Created Comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Gets Two Seasons On Netflix!
Put it in front of my face immediately.
In what will probably be the best move for the show ever, the Tina Fey-created, Ellie Kemper-starring comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has departed from NBC, and has instead been picked up for two seasons on Netflix.
Though it was originally supposed to be part of NBC’s midseason line-up, the show—about a woman who escapes from a cult and moves to New York City—will probably do much, much better on Netflix. Have you seen the state of NBC comedy lately? Unbreakable wouldn’t last six episodes.
Fey and co-creator Robert Carlock (Friends, 30 Rock) said that they’re “thrilled” to be debuting on Netflix, the show’s “best possible home.” But the split from NBC seems amicable, since NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt also released a statement saying that they decided Unbreakable‘s move to Netflix was “the best possible scenario to launch this captivating new series” because of NBC’s “drama-heavy mid-season schedule.” Which tells me that the show is going to be much more suited for a Netflix audience than a network television audience, which can only be good news.
Here’s the official show description:
The series stars Ellie Kemper (The Office) as Kimmy, a young woman who, after living in a cult for fifteen years, decides to reclaim her life and start over in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers, and a couple of way-past-due library books, she’s ready to take on a world she didn’t even think existed anymore. Wide-eyed but resilient, nothing is going to stand in her way. She quickly finds a new job (working for 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski), a new roommate (Tituss Burgess, 30 Rock), and a new beginning.
The cast also includes Lauren Adams, Sara Chase, Sol Miranda and Emmy winner Carol Kane (Taxi, Gotham).
The first thirteen episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will premiere on Netflix in March!
