Graphic-novels, especially ones targetted towards LGBTQ+ youth, have been really making phenomenal strides in creating the normalization of these identities for young people. From The Prince and the Dressmaker to The Witch Boy, it is truly a golden age of queer comics, and it’s continuing with an upcoming work from First Second Press: Cathy G. Johnson’s THE BREAKAWAYS.

Coming out Winter 2019, The Breakaways is the story of a young girl named Faith, who starts playing soccer to make friends. She ends up on a terrible team of people who are all really bad at soccer, but who all have their own reasons for playing. They slowly end up becoming friends (and quitting soccer).

The story features an assortment of diverse characters from different backgrounds, including queer characters, characters of color, and one person who is transitioning. The tagline of the book is “bad at sports, okay at friends.”

It sounds like a super fun and inclusive story from Johnson and in this exclusive preview, you can get a peek at the art, our lead group of delightful misfits, and all the beautiful color and body diversity the comic will be showcasing.
