New York Comic Con Schedule Now Online, Come Check Out The Mary Sue’s Three Panels!

They're going to be really cool, we promise!

Last year at New York Comic Con, we here at The Mary Sue got to host an incredible panel about diversity in writing. This year we’ve got not one but three of ’em for you to attend. At this rate of growth, we’ll probably run the entire con by 2025. Until then, check out the official descriptions and times for our panels here!

The Mary Sue Presents — Fight What You Know
Thursday October 9, 2:15 PM to 3:00 PM in room 1A14

The geek world needs better representation in media, but aren’t you supposed to write what you know? Truth is, the whole “write what you know” thing is a load of bull honkey. A Writer who can’t appreciate the perspectives of others is no kind of Writer at all. Writers from all backgrounds and experiences join to talk about research, listening, soliciting criticism and how to make sure you’re writing well when you’re outside the comfort zone of your own perspective.

The Mary Sue Presents – Strong Female Characters: The Women Shining in Geek Media
Saturday October 11, 1:15 PM to 2:00 PM in room 1A01

We often ask to see “strong female characters” in our geek media and are critical when Creators fall short but this Panel will focus on the positive representations of women, both as they exist now and as they’ve evolved over time and those creating them. We’ll also be discussing the impact positive representations had on the lives of the Panelists and their hopes for characters we’ll see in the future.

The Mary Sue Presents – All on the Table
Sunday October 12, 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM in room 1A21

The Mary Sue has gathered Panelists for a discussion on representation in games and how it’s personally affected us in our lives, both in work and recreation. Panelists will discuss their favorite characters of color, LGBTQ characters, disabled characters, and female characters in the games industry, dovetailing into a discussion of how to bring that diversity into the most egalitarian games of all: tabletop (and live action!) roleplay.

We’ve got a lot more awesome stuff planned for this year, so keep checking back for more NYCC news and coverage. In the meantime, the rest of the panel schedule just went online today at the New York Comic Con website, so start planning out your weekend in advance. We’d love to see you there at one or all of our panels!
