Trump’s Holocaust Memorial Note Is … Unusual
Donald Trump has taken our national embarrassment international in recent days, grasping glowing orbs, failing to grasp Melania’s hand, and also failing to grasp basic geography. During his visit to Israel, he made a stop at Yad Vashem, Israel’s memorial to Holocaust victims, and the note he wrote in the “book of remembrance” certainly struck a unique tone.
See if you can guess what I mean: “It is a great honor to be here with all of my friends. So amazing and will never forget!” As everyone’s pointing out, yes, it sounds like something you’d write in a yearbook rather than at a Holocaust memorial, but there’s something else about it that is, sadly, fairly expected when you think about it: It’s all about Trump. He feels honored. He gets to hang out somewhere important with his friends! What an amazing experience that he will never forget! That’s what going to a Holocaust memorial is about, right?
It’s Trump’s me-first brand to a T, despite any and all recent efforts—and yes, it’s still happening—to praise him as finally taking on a more presidential tone than the drunk-uncle-yelling-at-Fox-News-during-family-gathering tone he took on the campaign trail and everywhere else he’s communicated. Meanwhile, the note looks especially bad when compared to the one left by President Obama, though I apologize for that comparison breaking the rules that world leaders have agreed upon for toddler-like treatment of Donald Trump.

Even George W. Bush, a man not exactly known for having “the best words,” had the good sense to just write “God bless Israel” and avoid putting his foot in his mouth. Along with his lack of eloquence, Trump seems to lack even that level of self-awareness, which is how we wind up with weird moments like these. Here, have another: Trump literally telling the president of Israel that he’d just gotten back from the Middle East.

Clearly, we’re all in highly competent, tiny, and very presidential hands.
