Neil deGrasse Tyson Answers Science’s Biggest Question: Who Would Win in a Fight? Batman or Superman?
NERD.
This Daily Show interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson is great for many reasons—not the least of which being Tyson’s optimism about how the public is starting to care more about science and nerds inheriting the Earth. But, he also weighs in on his possible Batman v Superman involvement with a potentially mildly spoilery answer to which of those heroes would really win in a fight.
In case you didn’t realize, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s voice sure seemed to be in the Batman v Superman trailer, but he hasn’t definitively said one way or another whether it’s really him. Regardless, his answer to which hero would win in a fight took on more of a philosophical tone than a scientific one and seemed to indicate that he has some inside info on how the movie’s plot will shake out. So make sure you really want to know before watching or reading on.
Tyson’s answer was that it may be more public opinion of a hero than physical prowess that chooses the victor, and he seems to indicate that the public would actually be on Batman’s side. Of course, no matter the outcome of their fight, we all expect Batman and Superman to eventually team up to take down the movie’s actual villain, but Tyson’s answer certainly makes that initial struggle sound like a bit of a flip on the film’s Dark Knight Returns inspiration.
In Dark Knight Returns, it’s Superman who’s sent in to stop Batman, who’s viewed negatively by the world in general for his outlaw ways. But this sounds like Batman may be sent in for one last job by those who trust him to do the right thing as the only man they think has a chance of standing up to the man of steel. The teaser trailer already demonstrated that direction for the movie, but it sounds like that public opinion may play into the plot in a bigger way than we might have realized.
As a quick aside, it’s also worth noting that there’s a rather disappointing chemistry joke near the end of the interview that left a bit of a bad taste in our mouths, but we’re going to go ahead and let you all be the judge of that.
