The Story Behind This Morning’s @UberFacts Tweet About Halo Armor

It's weird when your friend is an UberFact.

If you follow the Twitter account @UberFacts you probably saw their tweet this morning about the guy who sold an engagement ring and bought Master Chief armor from Halo. It’s 100% true, and I know that because he’s one of my best friends, and he’s going to be writing for Geekosystem soon. He’s Eric Smith.

Eric co-founded and runs the blog Geekadelphia, works for Quirk Books, is the author of The Geek’s Guide to Dating, and like I said, is my friend. I can’t think of a lot of people with more geek cred than Eric, and we’re thrilled he’s going to be doing a geek dating advice column for us here at Geekosystem. (Send your questions!)

Geekosystem actually ran this story two years ago back when it happened, but the TL;DR version is that Eric was going to propose to a girl who dumped him, so he sold the ring and bought a full suit of Master Chief armor. This was the right decision.

When the story about Eric’s armor was going around the Internet I had him on as a guest on the talk show I hosted in a movie theater to talk about it. Watch him tell the story firsthand while I try to cram my giant head into his Master Chief helmet:

I asked Eric today what it’s like being an UberFact and he said:

It’s an honor to be listed amongst such important tidbits of human history, such as cats being mayors of cities and 15 foods that won’t fit in your mouth.

Eric is a great and incredibly romantic guy, but save your swoons, he’s spoken for. He just got engaged (in a very geeky way) and on behalf of his friends we’re thrilled about it.

<3 you, buddy.

Don’t forget to send Eric your geeky dating questions.
