Veronica Mars is returning to our screens, and not a moment too soon. The beloved noir series about a teen sleuth (Kristen Bell, in the role that made her famous) that solves crimes in the shady town of Neptune, California is as indefatigable as its heroine. After a three season run from 2004-2007, Mars has continued on, buoyed by a fandom that can’t get enough of its snarky leading lady.

This is the first full teaser for the Veronica Mars revival, an eight episode miniseries that is unofficially being referred to as season four. Bell reprises her titular role, along with returning cast members Percy Daggs III, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, and Francis Capra.

The synopsis for the new season reads, “Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the family of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.”

In the teaser, we see a guy attempting to mug Veronica before she tases him, then snaps a pic of him for Instagram. “When your best friend is murdered before your 17th birthday, you don’t develop a keen sense of mercy,” she says in voice-over. The new series promises a darker, more mature Veronica Mars, which makes it a great fit for Hulu. We even get a glimpse of a steamy scene between Veronica and Logan (Jason Dohring).

Bell said of the series, “It’s gonna be a much darker world, it’s going to be a bigger world, it’s definitely not what we did on UPN or The CW, so I want to brace fans for that, that it’s going to be darker and bigger and more cinematic, a little bit different.”

The teaser also gives us a glimpse of newcomers Patton Oswalt, who plays a true crime enthusiast/pizza delivery guy and J.K. Simmons, who looks to be the new Big Bad.

A record-setting Kickstarter campaign funded 2014’s Veronica Mars movie, which saw a grown up Veronica returning to Neptune, where she rekindled her romance with reformed bad boy Logan and took over her father’s private investigation company. Since the film, series creator Rob Thomas and Jennifer Graham have written two Veronica Mars novels and made a web series, Play It Again, Dick, starring Ryan Hansen.

It’s always a delight to see Veronica Mars return. Between the great cast chemistry, the dark humor, and the sharp writing, we’re always down to visit our favorite private investigator. Buckle up marshmallows, it’s going to be quite a summer.

Veronica Mars premieres on Hulu on July 26th.
