New Virtual Windshield Lets You See Through Vehicles
Q would so love this for the next Bond car.
We’ve all been there: stuck on the highway, trapped by a giant 18-wheeler, not sure if you should attempt to pass or just stay safe, in truck hell, for what seems like all of eternity. Lucky for us, researchers at the University of Porto feel our pain, and invented a See-Through System for car windshields. Zip past that annoying trucker with ease!
The See-Through System (STS) uses forward-facing webcam on your windshield to project a lightweight heads-up display on your windshield. This displayshows you what’s immediately in front of the view-obstructing vehicle in your way, essentially rendering it transparent. With a delay of only 200 milliseconds, the image shows cars to be about ten meters further away that they actually are (pretty much the opposite of your rear-view mirrors).
STS has been tested in a driving sim and live on the road, and was presented earlier in October at The International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality in Australia (which is apparently totally a thing). Now, when can I get one for my car?
