Iris Van Herpen’s Mermaid Dresses Will Look Perfect for Your Eternal Walk into the Sea
Iris van Herpen recently showcased her Fall 2016 designs in Paris, and the entire line has an unearthly, undersea vibe that looks perfect for your eternal descent into the depths of the ocean. I know you were all wondering what to wear before embarking upon that fateful sea-bound slumber, but now that question has been answered at last by maybe-a-mermaid-IRL-but-probably-just-a-human-designer Iris van Herpen.
The video above shows off several of the designs worn by the models at the Paris event, complete with Zen bowl accompaniment performed live by Japanese musician Kazuya Nagaya. The video doesn’t include all of the designs, however, many of which are stunning. Vogue has a slideshow up featuring more of the designs if you’d like to flip through them all.
I’m a big fan of this bubble-based gown, which looks like sea foam (harkening back to the original tragic ending of The Little Mermaid). According to Vogue’s additional coverage of the event, the dresses that I like the best are made out of “silicone-coated handblown glass bubbles—thousands of them” as well as “silicone-coated Swarovski water drop crystals.”
Of course I can’t afford any of these dresses, but if jellyfish-inspired couture ends up trickling down into a more affordable department store bracket, I won’t be complaining about it!
