AMC Announces The Walking Dead’s Michonne Casting Following Season Finale
And Fansplosions Abound
Michonne has been cast! Michonne has been cast! I feel like I’m shouting, “The British are coming!” but seriously, this is something to shout from the rooftops. AMC has chosen Treme actress Danai Gurira to play zombie apocalypse survivor (and all-around bada**) Michonne for their series, The Walking Dead. Hit the jump for details! (No spoilers!)
Fans of Robert Kirkman’s comic book have been waiting to hear who would pick up the reins on one of the titles most famous characters. Names had been thrown around as possibilities (solely within the fandom) like Rutina Wesley from True Blood, Tracie Thoms from Death Proof, or Gina Torres from Firefly but the showrunners were keeping mum on the topic. That is, until last night.
Kirkman and showrunner Glen Mazzara did a post-episode interview (we’ll have our usual episode recap up later today!) with the Hollywood Reporter in which they were still dancing around the issue of a name. “We’re in that process now,” said Mazzara. “We’re keeping secret on that for now,” said Kirkman. Well, that’s because the Hollywood Reporter was about to reveal the news themselves just minutes later.
Gurira is best known for her role of Jill on the HBO series Treme but she’s also a playwright. She’ll have to learn how to wield a sword (presuming she doesn’t know how to already) to play The Walking Dead’s Michonne, who is pretty adept at handling herself in the zombie-ridden world.
That’s all for now, don’t want to spoil things for anyone! Just know, this is “happy dance” kind of news.
